The LineZebre Parma built a maul try, kicked two penalties, and led with 70 minutes gone — then the contest moved to the lineout and the Italians had nothing left to offer.

3 DECIDING FACTORS

FINAL TAKE

Dragons RFC are three points clear of the bottom of the United Rugby Championship and have a game in hand on the side they just beat. Zebre Parma remain anchored at 16th with 15 points and a points differential that reflects two wins in 19 matches. The Italians led twice, scored a maul try, and still lost because they could not secure their own lineout or reclaim possession when it mattered. Richards finished what Thomas Young and Angus O'Brien had created in the last quarter, and Zebre Parma will spend the next fortnight wondering how they let a side three places above them dominate the final act so completely. Dragons RFC have won ugly before, but this was different — they were outplayed for long stretches, then chose the moment to impose themselves and did not let go.

PHASE PLAY & GAINLINE

Dragons RFC carried more, ran further, and still trailed with ten minutes remaining.

The visitors registered 117 carries for 420 metres across 148 runs. Zebre Parma answered with 96 carries, 399 metres, and 108 runs. The gainline success rates sat within one percentage point — Dragons RFC 73%, Zebre Parma 74% — and neither side could claim dominance in contact. Dragons RFC beat 20 defenders to Zebre Parma's 19. The difference showed in the clean breaks: five for Dragons RFC, three for Zebre Parma. Angus O'Brien and Thomas Young each registered one clean break, and both contributed directly to the scoreboard. O'Brien finished with 25 metres and two defenders beaten; Young added 26 metres, two assists, and two defenders beaten. Jared Rosser scored the opening try in the 23rd minute with 23 metres to his name. Ben Carter added a second-half try despite carrying for only five metres. David Richards contributed 20 metres, one defender beaten, and the match-winning try in the 82nd minute.

Zebre Parma built phases but could not convert possession into sustained pressure. The home side held 52% of the ball in the first half and entered the break trailing by one point. Tommaso Di Bartolomeo carried for 14 metres and scored a try in the 42nd minute. Giacomo Da Re accumulated 29 metres and kicked eight points without breaking a tackle. Samuele Locatelli entered in the 59th minute, carried for four metres, beat two defenders, and scored the try that gave Zebre Parma a 18-14 lead in the 70th minute. None of it mattered when Dragons RFC reclaimed possession and refused to let go.

Dragons RFC did not offload once in 117 carries. Zebre Parma managed five offloads and still could not sustain enough phase play to close the match.

SET PIECE

Dragons RFC won every lineout they threw to and stole one from Zebre Parma.

The visitors secured 17 from 17 and added a steal for good measure. Zebre Parma lost three of 18 lineouts and finished with 83% success. That gap decided field position in the final quarter. Dragons RFC scrummed six from six; Zebre Parma won three from three. Both sides finished with 100% scrum success, and neither could claim an edge at the engagement. The lineout told a different story. Ben Carter took 14 tackles, missed one, and scored a try in the 67th minute that came directly from clean set-piece ball. Zebre Parma could not answer. The home side lost possession three times in their own half and watched Dragons RFC convert territory into points.

Zebre Parma won six of seven mauls and scored one try from the drive. Dragons RFC secured five from five and did not concede a single maul. The visitors did not score from the maul, but they did not need to — the lineout gave them everything they required.

BREAKDOWN

Zebre Parma made 224 tackles and missed 20. Dragons RFC completed 130 and missed 19.

The home side defended for long periods and paid for it in energy. Tommaso Di Bartolomeo registered 21 tackles and missed one before his substitution in the 68th minute. Giacomo Da Re completed 11 tackles and missed two. Samuele Locatelli came off the bench and made eight tackles without a miss. Dragons RFC spread the load. Thomas Young completed 12 tackles and missed one. Ben Carter made 14 and missed one. David Richards tackled seven times and missed three, then scored the try that mattered.

Both sides won four turnovers and conceded between eight and twelve. Zebre Parma gave up 12 turnovers and could not sustain possession in the final quarter. Dragons RFC conceded eight and still controlled the ball when the match demanded it. Damiano Mazza led the error count with three bad passes and one turnover conceded before his substitution in the 62nd minute. Tommaso Di Bartolomeo added one bad pass and two turnovers conceded. Giovanni Licata contributed one bad pass and two turnovers before making way for Locatelli. Dragons RFC kept the ball in hand despite Angus O'Brien conceding two turnovers and David Richards matching that total.

Zebre Parma won 90 of 91 rucks and finished with 99% efficiency. Dragons RFC secured 125 of 129 and posted 97% efficiency. Neither side could claim breakdown dominance, and both lost the contest in other areas.

DEFENSIVE AUDIT

Zebre Parma made 94 more tackles than Dragons RFC and still conceded three tries.

The home side completed 224 tackles with a miss rate that sat just above Dragons RFC's 19. Zebre Parma missed 20 and could not prevent Jared Rosser, Ben Carter, and David Richards from crossing. The Dragons RFC tries came in the 23rd, 67th, and 82nd minutes. Rosser finished his chance without recording a defender beaten. Carter added his try after minimal carry metres. Richards beat one defender and scored the match-winner in the final seconds.

Dragons RFC defended with 14 men for 11 minutes after Levi Douglas received a yellow card in the 42nd minute. Zebre Parma scored one try during that period — Tommaso Di Bartolomeo's effort that gave the home side an 8-7 lead at the break. Dragons RFC returned to 15 men in the 53rd minute and conceded one more try in the 70th minute when Samuele Locatelli crossed for Zebre Parma's second score of the half. The visitors absorbed both scores, reclaimed possession, and closed the match with a 79% share of the ball in the final ten minutes.

Zebre Parma could not sustain defensive intensity across 80 minutes. The home side held firm for long stretches, then watched Dragons RFC monopolise territory and score when it mattered.

ATTACKING PATTERNS

Dragons RFC registered a 0.13 kick-to-pass ratio and kept the ball in hand for long sequences.

The visitors completed 200 passes and kicked 26 times from hand. Zebre Parma answered with 156 passes and 23 kicks, posting a 0.15 kick-to-pass ratio that mirrored the Dragons RFC approach. Both sides played through the hands and neither could claim a tactical edge in game management. Dragons RFC created five clean breaks to Zebre Parma's three and converted that edge into one additional try.

Angus O'Brien finished with one clean break, two defenders beaten, and two conversions from three attempts. Thomas Young added two assists, one clean break, and two defenders beaten. Jared Rosser scored in the 23rd minute with zero defenders beaten and zero clean breaks, suggesting the try came from structured phase play rather than individual brilliance. Ben Carter and David Richards followed with tries that reflected Dragons RFC's willingness to trust the process and wait for the moment.

Zebre Parma built attacks around Giacomo Da Re's kicking and short-phase ball retention. The home side created three clean breaks and beat 19 defenders but could not sustain enough possession in the final quarter to protect their lead. Samuele Locatelli scored in the 70th minute after beating two defenders in a four-metre carry. The try gave Zebre Parma a four-point lead and eight minutes to close the match. They touched the ball for 21% of the final ten minutes and lost by one point.

Dragons RFC posted a 2.18 carry efficiency rating to Zebre Parma's 2.38, and the visitors still found a way to score when the contest demanded it.

DISCIPLINE

Dragons RFC conceded 11 penalties and one yellow card. Zebre Parma gave away six penalties and received no cards.

Levi Douglas was shown yellow in the 42nd minute and spent ten minutes in the bin. Dragons RFC defended with 14 men until the 53rd minute and conceded one try during that period. Douglas returned to the field after his substitution window and did not feature again. The penalty count favoured Zebre Parma, but the home side could not convert numerical advantage into sustained pressure. Dragons RFC absorbed the yellow card, returned to 15 men, and controlled the final quarter.

Zebre Parma conceded six penalties and still could not regain possession when the match required it. The home side gave away four penalties at the maul and lost field position as a result. Dragons RFC conceded 11 penalties and won the match because they dominated the lineout and reclaimed the ball in the final ten minutes. The visitors committed more infractions and still dictated the terms of engagement when it mattered.

PERSONNEL VERDICTS

Giacomo Da Re kicked eight points, completed 11 tackles, missed two, and could not find the conversion that would have extended Zebre Parma's lead beyond one score. The fly-half posted 29 carry metres and zero defenders beaten, reflecting a performance built on game management rather than individual creativity. He converted one of two attempts and landed two penalty goals from two. His missed conversion in the 70th minute left Zebre Parma with a four-point lead instead of six, and Dragons RFC scored five points in the 82nd minute to win by one.

Tommaso Di Bartolomeo scored a try, made 21 tackles, missed one, and conceded two turnovers before his substitution in the 68th minute. The hooker carried for 14 metres without beating a defender and gave Zebre Parma an 8-7 lead at the break. His defensive workload reflected the pressure Dragons RFC applied for long periods.

Samuele Locatelli came off the bench in the 59th minute, carried for four metres, beat two defenders, made eight tackles without a miss, and scored the try that gave Zebre Parma a 18-14 lead in the 70th minute. The replacement flanker contributed two turnovers conceded and could not help his side regain possession in the final quarter.

David Richards finished with 20 carry metres, one defender beaten, seven tackles, three misses, and the try that won the match in the 82nd minute. The winger conceded two turnovers and still delivered when Dragons RFC needed him most. He had a difficult afternoon in defence but produced the moment that mattered.

Jared Rosser scored in the 23rd minute with 23 carry metres, zero defenders beaten, and two tackles completed. The winger did not miss a tackle and gave Dragons RFC an early lead they could not sustain until the final act.

Ben Carter made 14 tackles, missed one, carried for five metres, and scored the try in the 67th minute that brought Dragons RFC level at 11-12. The lock contributed zero defenders beaten and still found the line when the visitors needed a score.

Angus O'Brien registered one clean break, two defenders beaten, 25 carry metres, and two conversions from three attempts. The fullback conceded two turnovers and kicked Dragons RFC into position throughout the second half. He missed one conversion attempt and landed the two that mattered.

Thomas Young completed 12 tackles, missed one, carried for 26 metres, beat two defenders, registered one clean break, and contributed two assists. The openside flanker built the platform for David Richards to finish.

Levi Douglas spent ten minutes in the bin and did not return after his substitution in the 53rd minute. His yellow card came at the worst possible moment, and Dragons RFC defended with 14 men until the break without conceding more than one try.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR THE SEASON

Dragons RFC sit 15th with 28 points and a game in hand on Zebre Parma. The Welsh side have posted three wins, four draws, and 11 losses across 19 matches. They have conceded 71 tries and scored 46. The points differential sits at minus-131. This win moves them three points clear of the bottom and offers a pathway to 14th if they can sustain lineout dominance and territorial control in the final rounds.

Zebre Parma remain 16th with 15 points and a points differential of minus-275. The Italians have won two of 19 matches and conceded 85 tries. They have collected three try bonuses and four losing bonuses. The gap to Dragons RFC now sits at 13 points with the season running short. Zebre Parma built a maul try, led twice, and still lost because they could not secure their own lineout or reclaim possession when the match demanded it. That is the story of their season in 80 minutes.
