The LineLyon beat the gainline more often than their hosts but missed three times as many tackles — a defensive performance that belonged in a different competition entirely.

3 DECIDING FACTORS

FINAL TAKE

Stade Francais moved to fourth with a 42-point margin that reflected Lyon's defensive collapse more than their own brilliance. The hosts were clinical when it mattered, converting nine clean breaks into eight tries. Lyon's discipline and tackling fell apart in tandem — 17 penalties conceded, two yellow cards, and 34 missed tackles against a side that needed no invitation. Paul Abadie's two tries off the bench turned a comfortable win into a rout. Lyon remain tenth, three points above the relegation trapdoor, and this performance will haunt them when the final standings are calculated. Stade Francais are now genuine top-four material. Lyon are in a fight they cannot afford to lose.

PHASE PLAY & GAINLINE

Stade Francais won this match by doing less with more.

The hosts carried 113 times for 544 metres and won 69% of their gainline contests. Lyon carried 94 times for 343 metres and won 73% of their gainline battles. That four-point advantage in gainline success should have kept Lyon competitive. It did not. The difference sat in what happened after first contact. Lyon beat defenders 11 times across 94 carries. Stade Francais beat 34 defenders across 113 carries. That three-to-one ratio told the story before the scoreboard did.

Stade Francais registered a Carry Efficiency Rating of 4.52 to Lyon's 2.52. The gulf is stark. Lyon carried with purpose but without profit. Stade Francais carried with intent and left Lyon scrambling. Peniasi Dakuwaqa beat four defenders and carried for 74 metres. Samuel Ezeala beat three and carried for 42 metres. Leo Barre beat three and carried for 19 metres. The gainline was a starting point for Stade Francais. For Lyon it was the finish line.

Lyon's 16 offloads kept phases alive but could not paper over the fact that their defensive structure disintegrated every time Stade Francais moved the ball wide. The hosts managed 20 offloads and used them to stretch Lyon's already fragile edge defence. Esteban Gonzalez beat two defenders and carried for 44 metres, but his nine-man unit missed 34 tackles collectively. The gainline percentage meant nothing when the try line was left unguarded.

SET PIECE

Stade Francais dominated the lineout and held firm enough at scrum time to control territory.

The hosts won 14 of 15 lineouts at 93% success. Lyon won 11 of 13 at 85% and conceded one steal. That eight-percentage-point gap gave Stade Francais clean attacking ball in Lyon's 22 repeatedly. The scrum was less decisive but still tilted home. Stade Francais won seven of eight scrums at 88% success. Lyon won three of five at 60% and lost two against the shove. Neither side scored a maul try, but Stade Francais won six from six maul contests and earned one penalty. Lyon managed one maul from one.

The set piece was not where Stade Francais buried Lyon, but it was where they built the platform. Clean lineout ball led directly to go-forward phases that exposed Lyon's edge defence. The scrum penalties kept Lyon pinned in their own half during the opening quarter. Louis Carbonel's fifth-minute penalty goal came from a scrum infringement. The scoreboard pressure began there.

BREAKDOWN

Lyon lost the breakdown battle in efficiency and composure.

Stade Francais won 80 rucks from 81 at 99% efficiency. Lyon won 67 from 72 at 93%. That six-point gap does not sound catastrophic until the turnover count is factored in. Stade Francais conceded 13 turnovers but won six. Lyon conceded 12 and won five. The net effect was Lyon losing ball in attacking positions while Stade Francais retained through contact and recycled quickly enough to expose Lyon's defensive resets.

Stade Francais did not dominate the breakdown through jackaling brilliance. They dominated it by keeping their ruck speed high and their ball presentation clean. Lyon's ruck efficiency dropped because their defensive line could not reorganise fast enough after missed tackles. Stade Francais punished slow Lyon reloads with quick ruck ball and wide attacks. The breakdown was won in the moments after contact, not at the collision itself.

DEFENSIVE AUDIT

Lyon's defence did not crack. It evaporated.

The visitors missed 34 tackles. Stade Francais missed 11. That 23-tackle gap is the match in a single number. Gonzalez missed three tackles himself despite making six. Paddy Jackson and Alexandre Tchaptchet each contributed handling errors and failed to stem the edge flow. Lyon's defensive system required line speed and scramble cover. They delivered neither. Stade Francais made 116 tackles and missed 11 at a 91% success rate. Lyon made 123 tackles and missed 34 at a 78% success rate.

The two yellow cards compounded the problem. Alfred Parisien was shown yellow in the 21st minute. Lyon conceded tries in the 25th and 32nd minutes while defending with 14 men. Ave Jonathan Maalo was shown yellow in the 61st minute. Lyon conceded tries in the 64th, 76th and 80th minutes. Stade Francais scored five of their eight tries while Lyon were either numerically disadvantaged or still recovering their defensive structure after a card. That is not coincidence. That is clinical finishing against a side that could not hold shape under pressure.

Lyon's tackle accuracy fell apart widest on the edges. Dakuwaqa and Ezeala combined for seven defenders beaten and 116 metres. Jack Iscaro came off the bench and added 27 metres and a try without missing a tackle. Lyon's edge defenders were consistently late to the collision point. When they arrived, they missed.

ATTACKING PATTERNS

Stade Francais attacked with width and patience. Lyon attacked with ambition but no cutting edge.

The hosts completed nine clean breaks and turned them into eight tries. Lyon completed six clean breaks and turned them into two tries. The conversion rate separated competent attack from ruthless finishing. Dakuwaqa scored in the ninth minute after a clean break. Tani Vili scored in the 32nd minute. Paul Abadie scored twice in six minutes after coming on in the 47th minute. Leo Barre scored in the 76th minute. Noah Nene scored in the 80th minute. Stade Francais found space, committed defenders, and finished clinically.

Lyon's attacking patterns generated metres but not points. Irakli Aptsiauri scored in the 17th minute to make it 10-7. Gonzalez scored in the 55th minute to briefly threaten a comeback at 31-17. Both tries came from individual moments rather than sustained pressure. Lyon's 73% gainline success should have created more opportunities. It did not because their phase play lacked the precision to capitalise on fractured defensive lines.

Carbonel was the architect. He kicked one penalty, converted seven of seven attempts, ran for 49 metres, beat five defenders, and completed two clean breaks. His game management was faultless. He took the three points when offered, kicked to the corners when territory mattered, and played flat enough to fix Lyon's defensive line. Barre contributed one try, one assist, two clean breaks and three defenders beaten. The fullback was everywhere. His 19 metres understates his influence.

DISCIPLINE

Lyon imploded under the weight of their own indiscipline.

The visitors conceded 17 penalties. Stade Francais conceded five. That 12-penalty margin handed Stade Francais field position, scoreboard pressure, and two separate periods of numerical advantage. Parisien's 21st-minute yellow came at 17-7 and cost Lyon two tries. Maalo's 61st-minute yellow came at 38-17 and cost Lyon three more. Lyon were undisciplined in the contact area, offside at the breakdown, and late to defensive alignment. Stade Francais were not saints, but they were significantly cleaner.

The kick-pass ratio reflected Lyon's desperation. Stade Francais kicked 17 times from hand and passed 167 times for a ratio of 0.10. Lyon kicked 10 times and passed 144 times for a ratio of 0.07. Lyon played more rugby in hand but without the possession or territory to make it count. Stade Francais controlled 59% of possession and 66% of possession in the final 10 minutes. Lyon were chasing the game from the 25th minute onward and never stopped.

PERSONNEL VERDICTS

Louis Carbonel ran the show. His 17 points came from perfect goalkicking, but his performance was defined by his two clean breaks and five defenders beaten. He played flat, fixed defenders, and released his outside men into space Lyon could not cover. This was the complete fly-half performance.

Paul Abadie scored twice in six minutes after replacing Baptiste Pesenti in the 47th minute. His impact off the bench turned a comfortable win into a statement. He carried for 14 metres, made one tackle, and finished two chances with the game still in the balance. His second try in the 58th minute ended Lyon's hopes. This was the substitute performance that decides matches.

Peniasi Dakuwaqa was unplayable. He carried for 74 metres, beat four defenders, completed three clean breaks, and scored in the ninth minute. He made two tackles and missed none. Lyon had no answer for his pace or footwork. This was the wing performance that sets the tone.

Leo Barre scored a try, set up another, completed two clean breaks, and beat three defenders. He also made two bad passes and conceded three turnovers. His attacking output outweighed his handling errors, but the errors were costly. This was not a flawless performance, but it was a decisive one.

Esteban Gonzalez fought hard for Lyon. He scored a try, carried for 44 metres, completed two clean breaks, and beat two defenders. He also missed three tackles and made two bad passes. His defensive struggles mirrored his team's. This was a performance that deserved better support.

Paddy Jackson kicked two conversions and one penalty but could not control the game. He made two bad passes and conceded one turnover. His 10-man unit missed 34 tackles collectively. This was not the performance Lyon needed from their playmaker.

Alfred Parisien's yellow card in the 21st minute came at the worst possible moment. Lyon were trailing 17-7 but still in the contest. His absence coincided with two Stade Francais tries. Ave Jonathan Maalo's yellow card in the 61st minute came with Lyon already trailing 38-17. His absence coincided with three more tries. Both cards were avoidable. Both cost Lyon dearly.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR THE SEASON

Stade Francais moved to fourth with 73 league points and a points difference of plus 193. They are now 21 points clear of Lyon and firmly in the top-four conversation with playoff momentum building. This was the performance of a side that knows how to close out a season. Their set piece is reliable, their defence is organised, and their attack has cutting edge. Carbonel's game management and Dakuwaqa's finishing give them genuine weapons. They will take some beating at Stade Jean Bouin.

Lyon remain tenth with 52 league points and a points difference of minus 29. They are three points above the relegation zone with the season entering its final stretch. This was the performance of a side under pressure and unable to handle it. The 34 missed tackles, 17 penalties, and two yellow cards were symptomatic of deeper problems. Their gainline success means nothing if they cannot defend. Their attack has moments but no sustained threat. The gap between tenth and fourteenth is narrow, and Lyon are not playing like a side confident of survival.
