Jo Yapp has been appointed head coach for the first women's British & Irish Lions tour to New Zealand in 2027, the 46-year-old former England captain selected ahead of current England head coach John Mitchell. Yapp, who leads the women's pathway at the Rugby Football Union, previously took Australia to the quarter-finals of last year's Rugby World Cup. Mitchell had led England to World Cup victory in 2025 but lost out in the Lions selection process. The appointment marks the first time the Lions will field a women's side in their 137-year history. Yapp had publicly stated her desire for the role during the selection window.
