Wessels Sees Sevens Split: SVNS Series Faces Franchise Threat

Dave Wessels, SA Rugby's general manager of high performance, has flagged a coming fracture in sevens rugby as players increasingly divide time between World Rugby's SVNS series and emerging private franchise circuits. The prediction amounts to a structural challenge for the governing body, which has spent years centralising the shortened format under its own commercial umbrella. Wessels' read suggests the player market is already drifting beyond federation control.

It's the latest sign that sevens — long positioned as rugby's Olympic engine and development pathway — is heading toward the same fragmented model that has splintered Fifteen-a-side. Private leagues offer pay cheques without national obligations, and federations are left scrambling for player availability. For World Rugby, which has staked considerable equity on the SVNS brand and its global broadcast footprint, the threat is existential: lose the talent, lose the product. Wessels isn't speculating — he's reading the room.
