The Welsh Rugby Union has taken control of Resolven RFC, shuttering the National League Division Two East Central club effective end of season after former Wales captain Gareth Thomas's departure as director of rugby triggered a collapse. The WRU confirmed the intervention after the club — which Thomas joined in 2023 — became unviable, citing a breakdown in operations following his exit earlier this year.
Resolven will complete their fixtures but cease to exist as a senior entity, with the WRU working to preserve junior and age-grade sections under a reformed structure. The move marks another contraction in Welsh domestic rugby's lower tiers, where financial fragility and talent drain have eroded clubs outside the professional game. Thomas, who briefly revitalised Resolven's profile, has not commented on the collapse. The WRU called the decision 'regrettable but necessary' to prevent broader damage to the league's integrity.
