3 DECIDING FACTORS

FINAL TAKE

Bordeaux are top of the Champions Cup table for a reason. They absorbed Toulouse's first-half dominance with 63% possession and a 15-5 lead, then turned a red card and their own precision into a 25-point second-half surge. Lucu orchestrated the comeback with 10 points from the tee and the tactical control that allowed Bordeaux to exploit the extra man without overplaying. Jalibert scored one try and created another despite five missed tackles — his attacking instincts outweighed his defensive lapses on a day when Bordeaux needed both. Toulouse will point to the red card, and they should. But they will also have to reckon with the fact that they held the ball for more than half the match and created four clean breaks to Bordeaux's ten. That is not just about the numbers. That is about what you do when you have the ball.

PHASE PLAY & GAINLINE

Bordeaux won this match with fewer touches and more damage. Their carry efficiency rating of 3.73 against Toulouse's 2.77 tells the story cleanly: Bordeaux made 103 carries for 542 metres, Toulouse made 127 for 517. Toulouse worked harder for less. Bordeaux's 76% gainline success against Toulouse's 70% compounded the problem — every time Bordeaux touched the ball, they were more likely to go forward, and when they did, they went further.

The ten clean breaks to four split defines the contest. Toulouse's offload game produced 21 to Bordeaux's ten, but the offloads did not translate into line breaks. Bordeaux's breaks came from decision-making in the wide channels and off phase ball inside the 22. Jalibert's two clean breaks and 64 metres included the try he scored in the 45th minute that began the comeback. Arthur Retiere, on as a substitute in the 38th minute, added 48 metres, one clean break, and three defenders beaten in his 42 minutes on the field. His 74th-minute try sealed the margin.

Toulouse's metres came from individual brilliance rather than collective pressure. Thomas Ramos ran for 66 metres and beat four defenders. Teddy Thomas added 77 metres, two defenders beaten, and a try in the 39th minute. Romain Ntamack contributed 70 metres and a try in the 25th minute. But the clean breaks dried up after the red card, and without them, Toulouse's possession became a holding pattern rather than a threat.

SET PIECE

Bordeaux's lineout operated at 94% success across 17 throws, losing just one and stealing one from Toulouse. Toulouse's 73% success rate across 11 throws — eight won, three lost — was costly. One of those losses came in Bordeaux territory in the second half when Bordeaux needed an exit and Toulouse gave them one. The lineout discrepancy fed Bordeaux's maul platform, which produced one try and one penalty from six mauls. Toulouse's maul game generated no tries and no penalties from four attempts.

Both sides won all their scrum ball — Bordeaux three from three, Toulouse six from six. The scrum became less of a weapon and more of a restart mechanism after Aldegheri's red card in the 37th minute. Toulouse replaced him with a substitute front row at halftime, and the scrum held up, but the platform for attacking scrum ball disappeared. Bordeaux did not dominate the scrum in the second half; they did not need to. They had the extra man and the momentum.

Ben Tameifuna came on in the 49th minute and scored eight minutes later. His try came from close range after a phase buildup, and his presence stabilized Bordeaux's scrum and maul work in the final quarter. The replacement front row gave Bordeaux fresh legs against a Toulouse pack that had been defending with fourteen for twenty minutes and was visibly tiring.

BREAKDOWN

Bordeaux won twelve turnovers to Toulouse's eleven, but the timing of those turnovers shaped the match. Toulouse won three turnovers in the first twenty minutes, each of which halted Bordeaux momentum and allowed Toulouse to build phases. After the red card, Bordeaux's turnover work accelerated. They forced errors in Toulouse's 22 and turned those errors into points.

Toulouse's ruck efficiency sat at 92% across 109 rucks; Bordeaux's at 91% across 82. The marginal difference in efficiency mattered less than the number of rucks each side had to commit to. Toulouse played more phases, committed more bodies, and spent more energy defending than Bordeaux did. That showed in the final twenty minutes when Bordeaux scored two tries and Toulouse could not generate a response.

Jack Willis conceded three turnovers for Toulouse despite his reputation as a breakdown specialist. Matthew Carley penalized him once for not releasing and once for holding on. Willis's usual edge at the tackle area disappeared as Bordeaux's phase speed increased in the second half. Bordeaux did not slow their ball down long enough for Willis to get his hands in.

DEFENSIVE AUDIT

Bordeaux missed 26 tackles to Toulouse's 24 — both sides had defensive lapses, but Bordeaux's came in moments that did not cost them tries after halftime. Toulouse's missed tackles in the second half led directly to two Bordeaux tries. Jalibert missed five tackles, the highest count on either side, but his two clean breaks and 64 metres offset the defensive frailty. Maxime Lamothe missed four tackles before being substituted in the 41st minute. His opposite number in the Toulouse front row, Peato Mauvaka, was replaced in the 56th minute after Toulouse's defensive structure had already fractured.

Toulouse's defensive line held for the first forty minutes despite the red card. They led 15-5 at halftime with fourteen men, a testament to their scramble defence and Bordeaux's inability to convert early pressure. But the defensive effort required to hold that lead drained Toulouse in the second half. Bordeaux scored three tries between the 45th and 74th minutes, each one coming after sustained phase pressure that Toulouse could not repel.

Bordeaux's defensive effort in the first half kept them within ten points when they could easily have been buried. They made 158 tackles to Toulouse's 119, absorbing wave after wave of Toulouse attack. The tackle count reflects the possession imbalance — Toulouse held 63% of the ball in the first half — but also Bordeaux's willingness to defend without conceding tries. Toulouse scored twice in the first half. Bordeaux scored four times in the second. The defensive resilience in the first forty minutes made the second-half comeback possible.

ATTACKING PATTERNS

Bordeaux's attacking game shifted at halftime. In the first half, they kicked 33 times from hand with a kick-pass ratio of 0.25. Toulouse kicked 29 times with a ratio of 0.19. Both sides played territory, but Toulouse played it better. Their 63% first-half possession came from winning the kicking exchanges and forcing Bordeaux to defend from deep. Ramos kicked intelligently, finding grass and forcing Bordeaux to run the ball back from inside their own half.

In the second half, Bordeaux held 53% possession and used it to attack with phase speed rather than contestable kicks. Lucu controlled the tempo, taking quick taps when Toulouse were offside and slowing the game down when Bordeaux needed to reset. His two conversions and two penalties in the second half added ten points, but his game management was the more significant contribution. He dictated when Bordeaux played fast and when they played slow, and Toulouse could not adjust.

Jalibert's try in the 45th minute came from a quick phase move off a Toulouse turnover. He took a short ball from Lucu, broke one tackle, and scored under the posts. The try cut Toulouse's lead to 15-12 and announced Bordeaux's intent for the second half. Lucu converted, and Bordeaux led for the first time two minutes later when Tameifuna scored off a rolling maul.

Retiere's 74th-minute try came after Bordeaux had already secured the match. His 48 metres and three defenders beaten in 42 minutes gave Bordeaux a cutting edge off the bench that Toulouse could not match. Damian Penaud, whom Retiere replaced in the 38th minute, had been ineffective in the first half. The substitution gave Bordeaux fresh legs and a different attacking shape.

DISCIPLINE

Aldegheri's red card in the 37th minute changed the match. The referee, Matthew Carley, judged the incident serious enough for a sending-off. Aldegheri left the field permanently, but under the 20-minute red card law operating in European club rugby, Toulouse were able to bring on a replacement after 20 minutes. That replacement entered at halftime, meaning Toulouse played the final two minutes of the first half and the first 18 minutes of the second half with fourteen men. Aldegheri faces a disciplinary hearing under standard citing procedures.

Toulouse also lost Antoine Dupont to a yellow card in the 55th minute. The sin-binning meant Toulouse played with fourteen men for ten minutes in a period when they were already trailing 19-15. Bordeaux scored a penalty through Lucu in the 62nd minute while Dupont was off the field, extending their lead to 22-15. Dupont returned in the 65th minute, but the damage was done.

Toulouse conceded eleven penalties to Bordeaux's five. The penalty count reflects Toulouse's desperation in the second half as they scrambled to defend with fewer men and less energy. Bordeaux's discipline allowed them to play in Toulouse's half and apply sustained pressure. Lucu kicked two of his penalty attempts, both in the second half, and both from positions Toulouse gave him through infringements at the breakdown.

Bordeaux's penalty count of five across eighty minutes is exceptional in a Champions Cup knockout match. They conceded one penalty in the first half and four in the second, none of which led to Toulouse points. The discipline gave them the platform to attack without handing Toulouse easy exits.

Penalties conceded 5 11 Yellow cards 0 1 Red cards 0 1

PERSONNEL VERDICTS

Maxime Lucu ran the match in the second half. His ten points from the tee — two conversions and two penalties — kept Bordeaux ahead when the margin was tight. His 29 metres and one clean break do not capture his influence. He controlled when Bordeaux played fast and when they played slow, and his decision to take quick taps when Toulouse were offside forced Carley to show Dupont a yellow card. Lucu's kicking from hand was less assured — he shares responsibility for Bordeaux's 33 kicks — but his game management from the 45th minute onward was decisive.

Matthieu Jalibert had a difficult afternoon defensively, missing five tackles and conceding three turnovers. But his 64 metres, two clean breaks, and a try in the 45th minute made him indispensable. His willingness to take the ball to the line created the space for others, and his try began the comeback that defined the match. The defensive lapses will concern Bordeaux's coaches, but Jalibert's attacking instincts won the match.

Arthur Retiere came on in the 38th minute and gave Bordeaux a different threat in the wide channels. His 48 metres, one clean break, three defenders beaten, and a try in the 74th minute made him one of the most effective substitutes on either side. He replaced Penaud, who had been anonymous in the first half. The substitution changed Bordeaux's attacking shape and gave them the pace to exploit Toulouse's tiring defence.

Ben Tameifuna scored eight minutes after coming on in the 49th minute. His try came from close range after a rolling maul, and his four tackles without a miss gave Bordeaux solidity in the scrum and maul. The front-row rotation kept Bordeaux fresh when Toulouse were flagging.

Maxime Lamothe scored Bordeaux's first try in the 23rd minute and made thirteen tackles before being substituted in the 41st minute. His four missed tackles were a concern, but his work rate in the first half allowed Bordeaux to stay in contact when Toulouse held the majority of possession.

Thomas Ramos had an excellent first half for Toulouse, contributing 66 metres, four defenders beaten, one clean break, and five points from the tee. His conversion of Romain Ntamack's 25th-minute try and his penalty in the 41st minute gave Toulouse a 15-5 halftime lead. But his influence faded in the second half as Toulouse's possession became less productive and Bordeaux's defence tightened.

Teddy Thomas scored a try in the 39th minute and ran for 77 metres, beating two defenders. His three missed tackles were costly in the second half when Toulouse needed defensive solidity. His attacking threat was clear, but his defensive lapses contributed to Bordeaux's second-half dominance.

Romain Ntamack scored in the 25th minute and ran for 70 metres, but his impact diminished as Toulouse's forward platform collapsed. His twelve tackles and one miss were solid, but he could not generate the attacking chances in the second half that he had in the first.

Antoine Dupont's yellow card in the 55th minute came at the worst possible moment. Toulouse were trailing 19-15 and needed their captain on the field. His absence for ten minutes allowed Bordeaux to extend their lead to 22-15, and Toulouse never recovered.

Jack Willis conceded three turnovers and could not impose himself at the breakdown. His usual dominance at the tackle area disappeared as Bordeaux's phase speed increased.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR THE SEASON

Bordeaux remain top of the Champions Cup table with five wins from five matches. Their 20 league points and plus-76 points difference put them eight points clear of Toulouse, who slip to 12 points after this loss. Bordeaux have now beaten the second-placed team on their home ground, cementing their position as the tournament's form side.

Toulouse's second loss in five matches leaves them with work to do to secure a home quarter-final. Their points difference of plus-94 remains strong, but this defeat raises questions about their ability to win tight matches away from home. They led 15-5 at halftime with fourteen men and could not hold on. That will sting.

Bordeaux's ability to absorb pressure in the first half and then dominate in the second marks them as genuine contenders. They conceded 63% possession in the first forty minutes and still found a way to win by fifteen points. That resilience, combined with their attacking precision, makes them dangerous.

Toulouse will point to the red card and the yellow card, and they are right to do so. Aldegheri's sending-off cost them a player at a critical moment, and Dupont's sin-binning came when they were still in the match. But they will also have to reckon with the fact that they held the ball for 54% of the match and lost by fifteen. Possession without penetration is just expensive defence, and Toulouse discovered that across eighty minutes at Chaban-Delmas.
