The LineBenetton scored six tries from 42% possession because they moved the ball with violent intent every time they had it — Cardiff carried 127 times for 446 metres and came up three points short.

3 DECIDING FACTORS

FINAL TAKE

This was a match decided by what each side did with the ball when they had it. Benetton moved it with purpose and precision. Cardiff carried more, passed more, dominated territory in the closing stages, and still fell short. Tommaso Menoncello ran 114 metres and beat ten defenders — that is the difference between efficiency and volume. Jacob Umaga's yellow card handed Cardiff the platform to close within three points, but the damage was already done in the opening half-hour. Benetton remain unbeaten at the top of the pool. Cardiff are left to reconcile 58% possession with a three-point defeat and a growing sense that controlling the ball is not the same as controlling the result.

PHASE PLAY & GAINLINE

Benetton won the gainline battle and that decided the match.

They made 94 carries and hit the gainline 65 times at 69%. Cardiff made 127 carries and succeeded 80 times at 63%. The difference looks marginal until you factor in the metres. Benetton ran 528 metres from 94 carries. Cardiff ran 446 from 127. Benetton's carry efficiency rating was 4.7. Cardiff's was 2.62. That is not a marginal gap. That is the gap between a side moving the ball with violent intent and a side moving it without penetration.

Benetton beat 36 defenders. Cardiff beat 27. Benetton made eight clean breaks. Cardiff made seven. The numbers are close but the impact was not. Tommaso Menoncello's 114 metres and four clean breaks came with ten defenders beaten. Jacob Umaga added 76 metres, two clean breaks, and three defenders beaten before his yellow card. Leonardo Marin made no clean breaks but laid on three try assists from 53 metres and three defenders beaten. Benetton moved the ball through contact and found space on the other side.

Cardiff's ball retention was excellent — 126 rucks won from 129 at 98% efficiency — but retention without penetration is a treadmill. They offloaded seven times to Benetton's five. They passed 176 times to Benetton's 148. They had 58% possession. And they still lost the gainline battle because they could not convert volume into velocity.

SET PIECE

Benetton's lineout was the one fractured element in an otherwise cohesive performance.

They won 11 and lost three at 79% success. Cardiff won eight from eight at 100% and stole two Benetton throws. In a match this tight, that is a meaningful edge. Alun Lawrence — 14 tackles, two assists, a try, and two clean breaks from number eight — was a constant presence around Cardiff's maul. The visitors won four from four mauls without loss. Benetton won five from five but could not convert any into tries. The lineout slippage cost them field position in a second half where they defended for long stretches.

Both sides won four scrums and lost one at 80% success. The scrum was not a point of difference. The lineout was, and Cardiff won it.

BREAKDOWN

Cardiff won the turnover count but lost the breakdown war.

They forced four turnovers. Benetton forced three. Cardiff conceded nine turnovers. Benetton conceded 16. On paper, that is a Cardiff edge. In practice, it was not enough. Benetton's ruck efficiency was 99% — 81 won from 82. Cardiff's was 98% — 126 won from 129. Both sides retained the ball superbly. The difference was what they did with it once they had secured it.

Leonardo Marin conceded three turnovers and made four bad passes. Onisi Ratave conceded three turnovers but made none of the handling errors. Jacob Umaga made three bad passes and conceded one turnover. For Cardiff, Ioan Lloyd made two bad passes and conceded two turnovers. Mason Grady made two bad passes and conceded one. Ellis Bevan made two bad passes before his 66th-minute substitution.

The breakdown was not the problem for either side. The problem was what happened after the ruck.

DEFENSIVE AUDIT

Cardiff missed 36 tackles and that cost them the match.

Benetton missed 27. In a three-point game, nine missed tackles is the margin. Jacob Beetham made seven tackles and missed six. Jacob Umaga made five and missed four. Tommaso Menoncello made eight and missed six. Those three players combined for 16 missed tackles and 22 points scored. Benetton's attack was so clinical that even their defensive lapses could not undo the damage they inflicted going forward.

Cardiff's defensive structure held up in phases but fractured in transition. Liam Belcher made 13 tackles and missed one. Alun Lawrence made 14 and missed none. But the wider defensive line could not contain Benetton's speed merchants. Menoncello beat ten defenders. Umaga beat three before his yellow card. Onisi Ratave beat three and made eight tackles without a miss. Benetton found space on the edges because Cardiff could not get bodies across fast enough.

Benetton made 211 tackles to Cardiff's 136. They spent more time defending because they had less possession. But when they had the ball, they made it count. Cardiff defended for long periods in the second half and held Benetton scoreless after Menoncello's 41st-minute try. But they could not close the 17-point gap they conceded in the first half.

ATTACKING PATTERNS

Benetton scored six tries in the first 41 minutes and then defended for 39.

Tommaso Menoncello scored twice — in the opening minute and at 41 minutes. Jacob Umaga scored twice in the first quarter — at two minutes and 13 minutes. Thomas Gallo scored at 12 minutes. Onisi Ratave scored at 28 minutes. By half-time, Benetton had 38 points on the board and the game won.

Cardiff scored five tries — Liam Belcher at eight minutes, Jacob Beetham at 21 and 53 minutes, Alun Lawrence at 39 minutes, Ellis Bevan at 44 minutes. Callum Sheedy converted all five and finished with ten points. Cardiff's tries came in bursts but never with enough frequency to close the gap. They scored twice in the final 15 minutes of the first half to cut the deficit to 12 points. They scored twice in the opening ten minutes of the second half to close within five. But Benetton's early blitz had already built the cushion.

Jacob Umaga's yellow card at 45 minutes came after Ellis Bevan's try had cut the lead to ten points. Benetton played with 14 for ten minutes and conceded Jacob Beetham's second try at 53 minutes. Cardiff closed to within three points at 38-35. They had 85% possession in the last ten minutes. They could not score again.

Leonardo Marin laid on three try assists from the inside centre channel. His four bad passes and three turnovers conceded are the cost of playing with ambition. Jacob Umaga's two tries, one assist, 76 metres, and two clean breaks are the reward. Menoncello's two tries, 114 metres, and four clean breaks are the headline performance. Beetham's two tries came with 37 metres, one clean break, and seven tackles made — but six missed.

DISCIPLINE

Benetton conceded eight penalties. Cardiff conceded 11. Jacob Umaga's yellow card at 45 minutes was the only card of the match and it came at the worst possible moment for Benetton.

Cardiff had just scored through Ellis Bevan to close the gap to ten points. Benetton were down to 14 for ten minutes. Cardiff scored again at 53 minutes through Beetham to close within three. Umaga returned at 55 minutes but the damage was done. Benetton could not add to their tally after Menoncello's 41st-minute try. Cardiff could not find the score they needed in the closing stages despite 85% possession in the last ten minutes.

The penalty count favoured Benetton but not by enough to swing the match. Cardiff's discipline was acceptable. Their missed tackles were not.

PERSONNEL VERDICTS

Jacob Umaga played architect and wrecking ball before his yellow card. Two tries, one assist, 76 metres, two clean breaks, three defenders beaten, 18 points. He kicked four conversions from six attempts. He also made three bad passes, conceded one turnover, and missed four of his nine tackles. His yellow card at 45 minutes handed Cardiff the platform to close within three points. This was not a faultless performance but it was a match-winning one.

Tommaso Menoncello was the standout performer on the pitch. Two tries, 114 metres, four clean breaks, ten defenders beaten. He also made eight tackles and missed six. His defensive lapses are the cost of playing with such attacking ambition. His two tries bookended Benetton's scoring — at the opening minute and at 41 minutes. The second came immediately after Cardiff had closed to 33-21. Menoncello put the game out of reach.

Leonardo Marin laid on three try assists from 53 metres and beat three defenders. He also made four bad passes and conceded three turnovers. That is the highest handling error count on either side. His distribution created space for Umaga and Menoncello. His execution under pressure was found wanting.

Onisi Ratave scored once, made 28 metres, beat three defenders, and made eight tackles without a miss. He conceded three turnovers but made no bad passes. His defensive work on the wing was faultless. His attacking contribution was decisive.

Alun Lawrence was Cardiff's best forward. One try, two assists, 40 metres, two clean breaks, 14 tackles without a miss, two defenders beaten. He competed without let-up and kept Cardiff in the contest when Benetton threatened to blow the game open in the first half.

Jacob Beetham scored twice but his defensive lapses undermined his attacking impact. Two tries, 37 metres, one clean break, seven tackles made and six missed. His second try at 53 minutes brought Cardiff within three points. His six missed tackles left gaps Benetton exploited.

Callum Sheedy kicked five conversions from five attempts and finished with ten points. He made five tackles and missed two. He did not run the ball and made no metres. His distribution was tidy but Cardiff needed more from their ten than a flawless kicking display.

Liam Belcher scored Cardiff's first try at eight minutes, made 37 metres, one clean break, 13 tackles with one miss, and beat two defenders. He was substituted at 58 minutes. His work around the park was excellent but Cardiff could not sustain the platform he helped build.

Ellis Bevan scored at 44 minutes to bring Cardiff within ten points before Umaga's yellow card. He made two bad passes before his 66th-minute substitution. His try came at a crucial moment but Cardiff could not capitalise on the momentum.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR THE SEASON

Benetton remain unbeaten at the top of the pool with 19 points from four matches. This was their fourth consecutive win. They have scored 24 tries and conceded 11. They sit nine points clear of Cardiff in fourth. They won this match in the first 41 minutes and then held on for 39. That is not a template for knockout rugby but it is enough to secure a home tie in the next round.

Cardiff have now lost two of their four pool matches. They sit fourth with ten points. They had 58% possession, 85% of the ball in the last ten minutes, and still lost by three. They missed 36 tackles and that is the difference between a tight defeat and a statement win. They face a difficult path to the knockout stages. This was a match they could have won. They did not defend well enough to deserve it.
